The Hobby is the aerial acrobat among our falcons: a slender summer visitor that catches dragonflies on the wing and eats them in flight, and goes after swallows and swifts at dusk. In silhouette it is a giant swift.
Voice
Noisy around the nest in the breeding season: a clear, penetrating, evenly paced kyu-kyu-kyu-kyu or kew-kew-kew, fuller and lower than a Kestrel's rattle and with a plaintive undertone. The female begs with a hoarse, sustained wheep. Silent outside the breeding season. Your best chance of hearing one is June and July near a nest in a poplar row or a small pine stand.

Identification
Slim and long-winged, with narrow, scythe-shaped wings and a short, square-cut tail — together an anchor-like silhouette strongly recalling an outsized swift. Slate-blue to dark slate-grey above, creamy white below with dense, sharp black streaking. The head pattern is the best mark: a black helmet with a broad, wedge-shaped moustache set off against a white throat and white cheek patch. Adults have conspicuously rusty-red trousers and vent. Juveniles lack that red — their trousers and vent are cream to pale ochre — and are browner above with pale feather fringes. The flight is fast, agile and powerful, with long glides and startling stoops.
Confusion species
Kestrel has shorter wings and a longer tail, hovers, and has a much fainter moustache and a rufous back. Merlin is smaller and stockier, with shorter wings, barely any moustache and a much plainer face, and hunts low over the ground rather than high in the air. Red-footed Falcon is the same size and also long-winged, but the male is uniformly dark slate-grey with red legs and trousers; the female has an orange crown and underparts and a small black eye mask instead of a broad moustache. Peregrine is far bulkier and broader-based in the wing, with barred rather than streaked underparts.
Habitat
Half-open country: woodland edges, hedgerows, poplar rows and solitary pines beside wide open ground, marsh or water. It breeds in an old crow's or magpie's nest and hunts over pools, lakes, reedbed and saltmarsh, where dragonflies, swallows, swifts and bats concentrate. Late in the summer Hobbies gather over dragonfly-rich waters.

Range and movements
Breeds across almost all of Europe and east to Japan, and winters in sub-Saharan Africa. In the Netherlands it is a scarce but widespread breeder on the sandy soils, in the peat meadows and the river valleys, with a few hundred pairs. In Spain it is a scarce breeder in the northern half and the mountains, and otherwise mainly a passage migrant in May and from August to early October.

Where and when to look
Late afternoon and evening in July and August, over a pool, lake or reed marsh alive with dragonflies. Look for a silhouette that reads as a swift but is too large, and watch for sudden, elegant lunges; it often eats its prey in flight, bringing the foot up to the bill. A Barn Swallow roost in the reeds in August is an especially good bet.
Conservation status
Not threatened (IUCN: Least Concern) and broadly stable across Europe. Dutch numbers have fallen sharply since the 1970s, probably through the steep decline of large insects and of hirundines and through the loss of small-scale, half-open landscape. Disturbance of nest trees and illegal killing along the migration route play a local part too.
